Limestone is also crushed finely for use in filter beds where its porous structure can filter water. The paper and paint industries also utilize limestone as it contains calcium needed in production processes. Food and agricultural sectors employ limestone as well, as a soil conditioner and additive in animal feed.

Calcium Carbonate Extraction

A significant portion of extracted limestone undergoes further processing to extract its calcium carbonate content. This refinement process yields different compounds with applications across numerous sectors. Calcium carbonate can be converted into quicklime or slaked lime through heating. Quicklime and slaked lime, also known as lime, find prevalent use as a fluxing agent and soil amend-ment in agriculture. The paper, sugar refining, water treatment and other industries also utilize lime.

Calcium carbonate's thermal decomposition also produces calcium oxide and carbon dioxide, allowing its use in manufacturing cement. Being the binding agent in cement, calcium oxide enables concrete production on a massive scale for construction needs worldwide. Manufacturing industries too employ cement for casting metals and producing goods. Extracted calcium carbonate can similarly yield soda ash, used in glass, soap and detergent production, through the Solvay process.

Resources and Reserves

With such diverse applications from building to manufacturing, the mining of limestone remains a sizable global. As per the US Geological Survey, around 1.4 billion metric tons of limestone was mined in 2020 alone. Major producers include the United States, China, India, Germany and Russia. Estimated global limestone resources exceed 43 billion metric tons, signifying availability for continued production in coming decades.

Geologically, limestone deposits most commonly occur as stratified beds or lenses within sedimentary basins and platform carbonate buildups. They occur extensively across North America, Central Europe and Asia owing to various regressive events during the geological past. Regions like the US Midwest and the Lluc majorcó karst in Spain contain thick productive limestone sequences. With careful management, mining of limestone formations represents a sustainable use of geological resources. It remains an economically essential natural commodity unlike few others on Earth.
