Step-by-Step Guide to Abhyanga Massage at Home
Done regularly, Abhyanga enhances circulation, improves skin texture, promotes better sleep, and reduces stress.

Abhyanga massage, the ancient Ayurvedic practice of self-massage with warm oil, is more than just relaxation—it is a daily ritual for nourishing body, calming the mind, and detoxifying the system. Here’s how to perform it at home:

  1. Choose the Right Oil: Use sesame oil for Vata, coconut oil for Pitta, and mustard or sesame oil for Kapha. Warm the oil slightly before applying.

  2. Prepare the Space: Sit in a warm, quiet area. Place a towel beneath you to absorb excess oil.

  3. Begin with the Head: Massage the scalp in circular motions, applying oil gently to roots.

  4. Face and Ears: Use upward strokes on the face and small circles around ears.

  5. Arms and Hands: Massage from shoulders down to fingers with long strokes.

  6. Chest and Abdomen: Move in clockwise circles to support digestion.

  7. Legs and Feet: Use long, firm strokes from thighs to feet; pay special attention to soles.

  8. Rest and Absorb: Allow the oil to soak for 15–20 minutes.

  9. Warm Shower: Rinse with warm water; avoid harsh soap to retain nourishment.
