The process of collecting rainwater is known as rainwater harvesting, and in India, it has been practised for 4000 years. Rainwater harvesting is similar to saving money in the bank so that we can use it in the future. This stored water can be used for various purposes, such as domestic uses, irrigation, fire protection, and household work, etc. There are two methods of harvesting rainwater: groundwater recharge and surface runoff harvesting.
Various types of rainwater harvesting in India
Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting: The simple and easy method of collecting rainwater from a rooftop into a tank for later use via a pipe is known as rooftop rainwater harvesting.
Contour Bunds: This type of rainwater harvesting is suitable for areas with low rainfall and farming, where people collect water from extensive watersheds. This method reduces the velocity of runoff water.
Gabion Structure: This is a small dam-like structure with a height of 0.5 m, spanning a stream that is less than 10 m wide and is constructed from steel wire and rocks. Excess water overflows the dam, while the remaining water is stored as a recharge source.
Check Dams: Check dams are an effective water harvesting technique, also known as nala bunds. They are designed to recharge the stored water quickly. This method conserves water, enhances irrigation potential, and reduces soil erosion.
