SGPT and SGOT are two of the most prevalent types of liver enzymes. When liver cells are harmed or inflamed, these enzymes can leak into the bloodstream, leading to increased amounts of SGOT and SGPT in a blood test. Consequently, these enzymes are widely used as indicators of liver function and can aid in the diagnosis of liver diseases like hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer.
Apart from the liver, SGOT is also present in the kidney, muscles, heart, and even the brain. Conversely, SGPT is primarily found solely in the liver.
