Different history games aren't a new idea, but these weird RPGs take the idea to a whole new level.
Alternate versions of history are one of the coolest things that video games can be about. Walden: The New Order is one of the best and newest examples of this. In this new movie in the series, the Nazis won World War II. They now run the world and have an effect on popular culture, like The Beetles.
There are a lot more shooters set in a different time period, like BioShock, The Order: 1886, Homefront, and so on. Not as many RPGs have been made, but the ones that have are very interesting. Let's look at some well-known and less well-known alternate-history RPGs.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
Smart Systems' real-time tactical role-playing game S.T.E.A.M. has the code name "Code Name." Most people know them for making the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars games for Nintendo. In this steampunk version of the mid-1800s, Abraham Lincoln was president.
When aliens come to Earth, Lincoln forms a special task force to kill them before people get too scared. The former President is joined in the game by figures from real life and fiction, such as Tom Sawyer and John Henry.
Eternal Sonata
You could use cel shading in Eternal Sonata, which was an early HD turn-based RPG. This game came out first on the Xbox 360 in 2007 and then on the PS3 the next year. The whole game takes place in Frederic Chopin's dream. Chopin was a real musician who lived in the 1800s. He was only 39 years old when he died of terberikulosis in 1849.
So, the game takes place during his last hours, when he thinks of a magical and beautiful world. Tri-Crescendo, the company that made the 3D Star Ocean games, made this RPG for Bandai Namco.
Fallout 3
The Fallout games are a set of RPGs that take place in the future after the end of the world. Some people might not know that they are also alternative history RPGs since the story is hidden as deep as the Vaults. After the 1960s, history starts to become less like what we know it to be.
Like, the United States was split into thirteen commonwealths to match the number of original colonies. In 2077, The Great War breaks out, causing nuclear destruction around the world. Fallout 3 is one of the best games in the series. It takes place in 2277 and is about a Vault dweller who chooses to leave his colony.
Nostalgia
Nostalgia is set in a made-up version of the world in the 1800s, during the height of the adventure age. Drive Mad is like a mix of old Final Fantasy games and an Indiana Jones story. Some people think that the name comes from the authors' love of old-school role-playing games.
Also, the game's turn-based system isn't trying too hard, and the story was obvious from a mile away. In the UK and the US, it was a simple but fun little steampunk journey that took place in familiar places. DS players who played it in 2009 probably miss it now, which is kind of like a funny time loop.
Operation Darkness
Operation Darkness was and still is one of the Xbox 360's least well-known RPGs. It first came out in Japan in 2007 and then in the West a year later. A secret British government group is sent to kill Nazis during World War II, which is the setting of the game.
The Nazis have supernatural forces on their side, like zombies and magic. The British have their own magical support, including monsters who work with them. Though it's not one of Atlus's best strategy RPGs, it's still interesting enough to suggest you take a look.
Ring Of Red
Ring of Red is different from reality because the US and Russia decide to take over Japan after World War II instead of just holding it for a short time. This breaks the country in half, and the two sides go to war with each other. It's a game where soldiers drive huge robots known as Armored Fighting Walkers, or AFWs.
Not cool mechs like in Gundam, but more like big, clumsy tanks that walk on two legs. After players choose how to move on the standard tactical RPG grid, battles happen in real time.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
You could say that this is the third game in the series, but it's actually the second one. Before the PlayStation trio, there was Koudelka on the PS1, which had a similar feel. No matter how it came out, Shadow Hearts: Covenant is set during World War I, and Rasputin is trying to take over the world.
The Judgement Ring is what makes combat possible. It lets players time their hits to do more damage. The first two games take place during this time of war, while Shadow Hearts: From the New World jumps ahead to the United States' Prohibition era.
Wolfenstein RPG
Wolfenstein RPG started out as a web game in 2008, and in 2009, it was ported to iOS. The game looks a lot like the first Wolfenstein 3D, but now each player has to attack monsters in turn. Now that it's been played, the game seems less silly without all the blood and Nazis.
The main Wolfenstein games were great because of those two things, but the lighter tone is a nice addition to the series. You should have put Wolfenstein RPG on other systems, like the Switch, because it would have done really well there.
