Video games can make you feel a lot of different feelings, but they're especially good at making you feel alone.
The exploration of huge worlds that seem to be full of life in video games has been known to help build groups within those worlds. But this doesn't always seem to be the case. Some games seem to thrive on the feeling of being alone and have done a good job of making the worlds they explore feel lonely.
It's possible that these games don't have any real NPCs at all, or they have very few. Instead, the player adventures through an open world. There have been a lot of games made over the years, but some are better at making the player feel like they are the only one in the world.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Horizon: Zero Dawn gets off to a great start with different tribes that Aloy gets to deal with throughout the story. As an outcast, though, you don't get to talk to many people, and many people feel much safer when they go into the woods to hunt machines instead of getting to know people.
In Horizon: Zero Dawn, players don't have any friends, so they have to rely on their bow and other weapons that let them catch the dangerous machines they fight. In Horizon: Zero Dawn, the desert is often full of machines but rarely full of people. This has made many players feel alone while they explore.
Subnautica
If players choose not to follow the story of Subnautica, they may never see another person while they explore the ocean. For most of the sea life, the player will only hear the robotic voice of their diving suit. This voice likes to tell the player that the longer they stay underwater, the more oxygen they are losing.
The ocean is very empty and can make a person feel alone on its own, but being on an alien world with an ocean full of alien fish can make the feeling even worse. Players often find places that used to have people living in them but are now broken down and empty, making many of them feel like they're the only ones left.
Firewatch
A different example is Firewatch, where the only person the player talks to is a woman on the other end of the radio. Hank, the main character, never meets this person because he was put in charge of a watchtower to keep the forest safe.
Although Firewatch doesn't let you explore as much as these other games, it's still a great game that has made many players feel alone while telling an interesting story. As it seems like all other ways of talking are lost, players will start to depend on this person on the other end of the radio.
The Long Dark
One more type of games that makes you feel alone while you explore big, empty worlds is survival games, and The Long Dark is no different. The story of The Long Dark is amazing, but many players may have had trouble following it because the game is hard and living in the wilderness is hard.
The Long Dark is a very lonely game because all you can see around you is snow as you look for resources and a place to stay. Wolf or bear encounters are possible, but they aren't really social exchanges since the animals quickly try to kill the player. Because of this, The Long Dark is a must-play for anyone who wants to feel alone.
Gris
The experience of Gris is very emotional and deals with loss and sadness. In this game, players take control of a girl who is lost in her own thoughts after a terrible event that made her feel incredibly sad.
Since there aren't many other characters to deal with in Gris, players will likely feel the emotional weight of this atmospheric independent adventure while they enjoy the beauty of each place they visit. Gris doesn't have any words either, so the story is told through movements. This lack of conversation is another thing that makes you feel even more alone.
Journey
Like Gris, Journey is an adventure game that doesn't have any dialogue. Instead, the story is told through the main character's acts and the adventures they go on. Journey can be played with other people, but it will feel much more lonely if you play it by yourself.
As the name of the game suggests, trip is about a trip that each player has to take on their own. When you add in the game's great music, which was also nominated for a Grammy, you get a nice feeling of being alone.
Outer Wilds
There are many planets in space, but no living things. Of course, Outer Wilds is the same way: the player goes on a journey by themselves and doesn't meet many other aliens or people. In this action-adventure game, players have to look around a solar system that is stuck in a never-ending loop of time.
By going to these places at different times, you can solve a puzzle and learn a lot about the history of the solar system. The player must put the pieces together without any help from anyone else in order to break the solar system out of the time loop that has cut it off from the rest of space.
Everybody's Gone To The Rapture
There is an empty town in Shropshire where no one lives. Toys are all over the playgrounds, and leaflets about quarantine are blown around by the wind. As players look around the town, they will find out what happened to the people who used to live there.
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is a horrifyingly lonely game while the players try to figure out what happened. The atmosphere is very creepy, there aren't many people in the town, and strange voices can be heard on the radios.
No Man's Sky
One more sci-fi space journey that makes you feel alone in a big world is No Man's Sky. In Doodle Baseball, players can go to a lot of different solar systems and explore them. Each world is full of different kinds of life, but not many of them are inhabited by real people.
Players can now feel more like they are part of a group in No Man's Sky, but they can still choose to explore space by themselves. There are a lot of planets to visit in No Man's Sky, and many of them don't have any humanoid life on them. This makes the game very lonely.
Death Stranding
Death Stranding is without a question the best game that makes you feel like you're all by yourself. Because the only goal is to move goods between bunkers, players don't see many NPCs or real people on their travels.
Since the BTs and Timefall showed up, people have gone underground to live. This means that characters like Sam have to go to the surface to bring important things, like pizzas. Walking from one place to another while listening to music may sound like a fun thing to do, but it's actually a very lonely thing to do.
